Should surgeons wait to close wounds after emergency surgery? new study investigates.

NCT ID NCT07142395

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 35 times

Summary

This study looked at 82 adults who had emergency abdominal surgery to see if waiting a few days before closing the skin (delayed closure) leads to fewer wound infections than closing it right away. Half the patients had immediate closure, and half had closure after 3-5 days of daily dressing changes. The goal is to help doctors choose the safest method to prevent infections and improve recovery.
