Web-based program may help insomniacs kick the sleeping pill habit
NCT ID NCT02720458
First seen May 21, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether a simple online self-help program could help people with chronic insomnia stop using sleeping pills like benzodiazepines and Z-drugs. 62 adults who had been taking these medications for at least 3 months and wanted to quit were randomly assigned to either receive the online program plus gradual dose reduction, or gradual dose reduction alone. The program was based on cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques like restricting time in bed and controlling sleep stimuli. The main goal was to see if the online program helped more people successfully stop their medication, as measured by urine tests.
