Gentler cavity treatment for kids could save teeth and avoid root canals

NCT ID NCT06944028

First seen Jan 07, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 27 times

Summary

This study tests two careful methods for treating deep cavities in children's permanent molars and premolars. Instead of removing all decay, dentists leave a small amount of soft tissue near the nerve to protect it. One method does this in a single visit, the other in two visits months apart. The goal is to keep the tooth alive and healthy without needing a root canal. The trial will follow 666 children aged 8-19 for up to 3 years.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Selective excavation or stepwise excavation (dental procedures)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a gentler, one-step cavity treatment works as well as a two-step approach, saving time and discomfort for children with deep cavities.

What could go wrong

This is a mid-sized trial with 1-3 year follow-up, so long-term results beyond that are unknown. The procedures may still fail, leading to root canal or tooth loss in some cases.
