Spit test for implant health? saliva study probes immune signals
NCT ID NCT07813845
First seen Sep 10, 2026 · Last updated Sep 11, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Researchers at Akdeniz University are studying whether saliva contains different levels of three markers, sIgA, MMP-8, and MMP-9, depending on a person's dental setup. The study compares 107 adults in four groups: people with healthy natural teeth, people with partial implant-supported bridges plus some natural teeth, people with full-arch fixed implant prostheses, and people with implant-retained overdentures. Participants give unstimulated saliva samples, and researchers measure the markers with lab tests. The goal is to see if these saliva signals relate to implant type and gum measurements like probing depth.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If saliva markers track with implant type or gum health, dentists could one day use a simple spit test to spot early implant problems instead of relying on probing alone.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small observational study that only measures markers at one point in time. It cannot show cause and effect, and the findings may not apply to other implant designs or patient groups.

Who is studied
Adults attending the Department of Prosthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, Akdeniz University were recruited and classified according to their existing dentition and prosthetic status. The study population included periodontally healthy fully dentate individuals without implants and patients rehabilitated with implant-supported partial fixed prostheses, full-arch fixed implant-supported prostheses, or implant-retained overdentures. Prosthetic rehabilitation was present before enrollment and was not assigned by the study protocol.

Exclusion Criteria: * Antibiotic use within the preceding 6 months. * Periodontal therapy within the preceding 6 months. * Systemic conditions known to affect periodontal or immune status, including diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or inflammatory bowel disease. * Systemic infectious diseases, including tuberculosis, hepatitis, or human immunodeficiency virus infection. * Mucocutaneous diseases affecting the oral mucosa, including lichen planus, pemphigus vulgaris, or chronic ulcerative stomatitis. * Ongoing systemic corticosteroid, immunosuppressant, or biologic therapy. * Pregnancy or lactation.
