New gum-saving technique may help more people get dental implants

Summary

This study tested two different materials—a special blood-clot product (extended platelet rich fibrin) and a gel-like substance mixed with bone graft (hyaluronate enriched xenografts)—to rebuild a narrow upper jawbone. 34 people with a thin ridge (3-6 mm wide) but enough bone height received one of the materials through a small tunnel under the gum. After six months, the goal was to see if the bone became wide enough to place dental implants safely.
