Rib-Tickling test: how good are needlers at finding your ribs?
NCT ID NCT04066166
First seen Apr 28, 2026
Summary
This completed study from the University of Utah tested how accurately a practitioner can locate a rib by touch (palpation) for dry needling of deep shoulder muscles. Using ultrasound as a gold standard, researchers compared the practitioner's guess to the actual rib location in 44 healthy adults. The goal was to see if palpation alone is reliable enough to guide safe needling. Results will help inform training and reduce risk of accidentally puncturing the lung.
