Second look inside the kidney: could repeat biopsies improve lupus care?

NCT ID NCT04449991

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 42 times

Summary

This study looks at whether doing a repeat kidney biopsy one year after starting treatment for lupus nephritis helps doctors decide if more treatment is needed. About 206 patients with a first episode of lupus nephritis will be randomly assigned to either have a repeat biopsy or not. The goal is to see if the biopsy group has better kidney function and fewer relapses over the next few years.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that repeat biopsies help doctors tailor treatment to reduce kidney damage and improve long-term kidney function in lupus nephritis patients.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage observational study, not a treatment trial. The biopsy is a procedure with risks like bleeding or infection, and the benefit of repeat biopsies is not yet proven.
