Can a Therapist's hands ease fibromyalgia pain?
NCT ID NCT07821034
First seen Sep 15, 2026 · Last updated Sep 16, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Researchers are testing whether Reiki therapy reduces pain and the overall impact of fibromyalgia in women. Eighty-four women with a confirmed diagnosis will receive either real Reiki or a sham session with no hand placement, once a week for four weeks. The trial measures pain intensity, fibromyalgia impact, depression, anxiety, and sleep quality before and after treatment, plus heart rate and breathing around each session.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Reiki therapy, a hands-on energy healing practice
- What this could lead to
- If Reiki outperforms the sham sessions, it could offer women with fibromyalgia a low-risk, drug-free way to ease pain and improve daily life.
- What could go wrong
- Reiki has no established biological mechanism, and a four-week trial of 84 women cannot prove lasting benefit. Any improvement may come from relaxation or the attention of a therapist rather than the technique itself.
