Sound sleep hack may ease PTSD nightmares

NCT ID NCT05933109

First seen Mar 10, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 11 times

Summary

This study tested a new way to help people with PTSD who have frequent nightmares. Participants practiced changing their nightmare story during the day (imagery rehearsal therapy) and then heard a sound during REM sleep to reinforce the new, positive dream. Half of the 46 adults got the sound linked to their new dream; the other half heard a different sound. The goal was to see if the sound cue could make the therapy work faster and reduce PTSD symptoms and nightmare frequency.
