Scientists test magic mushroom drug on older Adults' brains

NCT ID NCT07386730

Summary

This early-stage study aims to understand how two drugs—psilocybin (from magic mushrooms) and dextromethorphan (a cough medicine ingredient)—affect brain activity and inflammation markers in healthy older adults who report low well-being. Researchers will measure brain waves, blood markers, and use brain scans in 80 participants aged 50-85 over three months. The study compares different doses to see how these substances work in the brain, particularly in people who might have early signs of Alzheimer's disease.
