Can a wider biopsy needle sharpen prostate cancer diagnosis?
NCT ID NCT06830265
First seen Sep 04, 2026 · Last updated Sep 04, 2026
Summary
Prostate biopsies can misjudge cancer severity up to 40% of the time. This trial tests a new needle that collects more tissue than standard ones, aiming to give pathologists a clearer sample. Researchers will compare tissue amount and quality from both needles in 200 men with suspicious MRI findings. They will also check if computer analysis of the samples matches traditional pathology readings.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- A novel needle biopsy catheter that captures more prostate tissue than standard needles
- What this could lead to
- If the new needle collects more and better-quality tissue, it could make prostate cancer grading more accurate and reduce misdiagnosis.
- What could go wrong
- The trial is early and measures tissue quality, not patient outcomes. The new needle may not improve diagnosis enough to replace standard care.
