Can a breathing mask after surgery save lungs? new trial investigates
NCT ID NCT03629431
First seen Jan 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 22 times
Summary
This study tested whether giving patients breathing support (non-invasive ventilation) soon after surgery could prevent serious lung complications. It included 266 adults at high risk for lung problems, identified using a scoring system called ARISCAT. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either the breathing support in the ICU or standard post-surgery care. The main goal was to see if fewer patients developed acute respiratory failure within the first week after surgery.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
non-invasive ventilation (breathing support via a mask)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could lead to a standard preventive breathing treatment after surgery for patients at high risk of lung problems.
What could go wrong
This is a completed trial, but the approach may not work for all high-risk patients or may be hard to implement in routine care. Results need confirmation in broader settings.
