Can a website stop repeat overdoses after intensive care?
NCT ID NCT07819500
First seen Sep 15, 2026 · Last updated Sep 16, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Researchers at Karolinska Institutet are testing a digital self-help tool called Preventox for patients discharged from intensive care after an intoxication or overdose. The tool lets patients set goals, track substance use, identify high-risk situations, and make a crisis plan. The pilot study enrolls 50 adults treated at Södersjukhuset in Stockholm. Researchers will check national registries at 1, 3, and 12 months to see whether participants return to hospital for another intoxication, withdrawal seizure, or delirium tremens.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Preventox, a digital self-help website for patients recovering from intoxication
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could give hospitals a low-cost way to support patients after an overdose and reduce repeat emergency visits.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small pilot study of 50 people, so it may not show a clear benefit. Some patients may not use the tool, and registry data may miss important details.
