Could a slight oxygen change save preemie lungs?
NCT ID NCT07235345
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether giving a lung treatment (surfactant) at a lower oxygen level helps very premature babies (born before 32 weeks) breathe better. Researchers will compare two oxygen thresholds (25% vs 30%) to see which leads to less time on breathing machines and fewer complications. The goal is to find the best timing for this common therapy.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- pulmonary surfactant
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to a safer, more effective way to give lung treatment to very premature babies, potentially reducing their time on breathing machines.
- What could go wrong
- This is a mid-stage study with 500 babies, but it only compares two oxygen thresholds, not a new drug. The results may not apply to all preterm infants or settings.
