First seen Feb 16, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 10 times

Summary

This study looked at 575 older adults who had knee or hip replacement surgery to see if having chronic pain before the operation made them more likely to feel depressed afterward. Researchers found that people with ongoing pain before surgery had a higher chance of developing depressive symptoms within a week after the procedure. The goal is to help doctors better manage pain and mood to improve recovery.
