Could refeeding ostomy contents speed up bowel recovery?
NCT ID NCT06461559
First seen Jan 07, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 24 times
Summary
This study tests a simple idea: before surgery to reverse an ileostomy, participants will infuse their own ostomy contents back into the inactive part of the bowel. The goal is to 'retrain' that section to handle digestion again, potentially speeding up recovery of normal bowel function after surgery. The study involves 20 adults with a loop ileostomy who are scheduled for takedown surgery.
