New tests could help spot hidden blood disorder in seniors
NCT ID NCT01648556
First seen Mar 16, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 9 times
Summary
This study followed 37 adults over age 60 with unexplained low platelet counts to see if certain tests could predict immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). Participants had blood tests, bone marrow biopsies, and a short course of the steroid prednisone. The goal was to find which tests best point to ITP, helping doctors avoid unnecessary procedures and start the right treatment sooner.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors better diagnose immune thrombocytopenia in older adults, leading to more targeted treatment.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 37 participants. The results may not apply to all patients, and the tests studied might not be reliable enough for routine use.
