Can a simple neck measurement predict a tough airway?

NCT ID NCT07547943

First seen May 10, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 9 times

Summary

This study will test whether measuring the height from chin to neck (thyromental height) or using ultrasound to see neck tissues can better predict when placing a breathing tube will be hard. Researchers will watch 240 adults having planned surgery under general anesthesia. The goal is to find a quick, non-invasive way to spot potential airway problems before they happen.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a simple, reliable way to predict difficult airways before surgery, improving patient safety.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It only measures prediction accuracy, and results may not apply to all patients or settings.
