New ultrasonic scalpel aims to spare nerves in jaw surgery
NCT ID NCT07174193
First seen Oct 31, 2025
Summary
This study compares a new ultrasonic cutting tool (piezosurgery) to standard saws and drills in jaw realignment surgery. The goal is to see if it causes less nerve damage and fewer complications. About 70 adults will be randomly assigned to one method and followed for a year. If successful, it could mean safer surgery and quicker recovery.

What this could lead to
If it works, this could lead to fewer nerve injuries and faster recovery for people undergoing jaw surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 70 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The benefits over conventional methods are still unproven.
