Could a common seizure drug calm ICU delirium?

NCT ID NCT07548489

First seen Apr 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 12 times

Summary

This study tests whether phenobarbital, a drug used for seizures, can safely treat agitated delirium in ICU patients. Agitated delirium causes confusion and dangerous impulsiveness. Researchers will compare phenobarbital to standard antipsychotic medications in 150 adults, measuring how long patients stay in the ICU and hospital, and how much extra calming medicine they need.

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a new, possibly safer option to calm agitated ICU patients and shorten their hospital stay.

What could go wrong

This is a Phase 3 trial, but it's still early to know if phenobarbital is truly better or safer than current treatments. Side effects like sedation or breathing problems are possible.
