New hope for leg amputation: rerouting blood flow saves limbs

Summary

This study tested a device that creates a small connection between a vein and artery below the knee to reroute blood flow in people with critical limb ischemia, a severe blockage that puts the leg at risk of amputation. 34 participants who had no other treatment options were enrolled. The goal was to see if the procedure could safely save the limb and help wounds heal.
