New DNA test could beat old method for tough UTIs

NCT ID NCT06996301

First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 30 times

Summary

This study tested whether a rapid DNA-based test (PCR) is better than the usual lab culture for diagnosing complicated urinary tract infections (cUTIs) in adults. Over 700 participants were randomly assigned to have their treatment guided by either PCR or culture results. The goal was to see which method leads to better symptom relief and fewer unnecessary antibiotics.
