New brain surgery could spare stroke patients second operation

This study compares a new surgical technique called Expansion-floating Craniotomy (EC) against the current standard surgery for treating dangerous brain swelling after a major stroke. The new method temporarily lifts a section of skull to relieve pressure while keeping the bone attached, potentially avoiding the need for a second surgery months later. Researchers will enroll 356 adults with severe strokes to see if the new approach works as well as the standard procedure while possibly reducing complications.
