New immunotherapy duo takes on tough esophageal cancer

NCT ID NCT04785820

First seen Apr 18, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 14 times

Summary

This phase 2 trial tested two new experimental drugs, lomvastomig and tobemstomig, against the standard immunotherapy nivolumab in 190 people with advanced esophageal cancer that had stopped responding to chemotherapy. The drugs are designed to boost the immune system's ability to fight cancer. The study was completed, but enrollment in the lomvastomig group was stopped early for strategic reasons, not safety concerns.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Lomvastomig and tobemstomig (bispecific antibodies) compared to nivolumab (Opdivo)

What this could lead to

If successful, these new antibodies could offer a more effective immunotherapy option for people with advanced esophageal cancer that has stopped responding to standard chemotherapy.

What could go wrong

This is a phase 2 trial, so results are still early. One of the drugs (lomvastomig) was stopped for strategic reasons, not safety, but its future is uncertain. The study is also relatively small (190 people).

Conditions

The condition(s) this trial relates to.
