Shoulder surgery patients report fewer wound issues with nerve block
NCT ID NCT05499897
First seen Apr 03, 2026 · Last updated Jun 21, 2026 · Updated 12 times
Summary
This study compared a nerve block (using bupivacaine) to general anesthesia in 34 adults having open rotator cuff repair. The goal was to see if the nerve block led to fewer wound-related symptoms and different levels of immune markers in the blood. Results suggest the nerve block may improve early recovery, but the study is small and exploratory.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
bupivacaine (nerve block)
What this could lead to
If the nerve block works better, it could lead to less pain and fewer wound symptoms after shoulder surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early study with only 34 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The nerve block also carries risks like temporary weakness or rare complications.
