Blood test may predict delirium risk in elderly hip surgery patients

NCT ID NCT07297017

First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 26 times

Summary

This study looks at whether the Naples Prognostic Score, a combination of blood markers, can predict postoperative delirium in elderly patients having hip fracture surgery. Researchers will enroll 168 people aged 60 and older and check for delirium daily using a standard assessment. If the score works, it could help doctors identify high-risk patients early, but this is an observational study and does not test any treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could give doctors a simple blood-based tool to identify elderly patients at high risk for delirium after hip surgery, allowing earlier preventive care.

What could go wrong

This is a small, single-center observational study, not a treatment trial. The score may not be accurate enough to use in practice, and results may not apply to other hospitals or patient groups.
