Apple watch may help you recover from hip or knee surgery without In-Person PT
NCT ID NCT03737149
First seen Nov 06, 2025
Summary
This completed study tested whether a mobile app (mymobility) paired with an Apple Watch could serve as an alternative to standard physical therapy for people recovering from hip or knee replacement surgery. Over 6,500 adults who were scheduled for joint replacement participated. The app provided guided exercises and education, while the Apple Watch tracked activity. The goal was to see if this digital approach could reduce hospital readmissions and improve patient-reported outcomes like knee and hip function.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
mymobility mobile application paired with Apple Watch
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a smartphone app and wearable device are a viable alternative to in-person physical therapy after joint replacement, potentially making recovery more convenient and accessible.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial, so it cannot prove the app causes better outcomes. Results may not apply to all patients, and the technology requires an iPhone and Apple Watch, limiting access.
