New PET tracer aims to spot Parkinson's in the brain

NCT ID NCT07640555

First seen Jun 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This early-phase study tests a new radioactive tracer called [¹⁸F]MODAG-009, which is designed to stick to abnormal clumps of a protein called alpha-synuclein in the brain. These clumps are linked to Parkinson's disease and multiple system atrophy (MSA). About 13 people—including those with Parkinson's, MSA, and healthy volunteers—will receive one injection of the tracer and then have a PET scan. The main goal is to see if the tracer can clearly light up these protein clumps and to check that it is safe.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

[¹⁸F]MODAG-009 (a radioactive tracer for PET imaging)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a new way to diagnose Parkinson's disease and multiple system atrophy more accurately using brain scans.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small study (13 people) focused on imaging, not treatment. The tracer may not clearly distinguish between conditions or could have safety issues.

Conditions

The condition(s) this trial relates to.
