Heart surgery brain fog: scientists hunt for a blood test to predict memory loss

NCT ID NCT07231731

First seen Nov 17, 2025 · Last updated May 19, 2026 · Updated 28 times

Summary

This study looked at 48 older adults (ages 65-80) who had coronary artery bypass surgery. Researchers wanted to see if a small molecule called microRNA-151-5p, which is linked to inflammation, could help predict memory and thinking problems that sometimes occur after surgery. They measured levels of this molecule and tested thinking skills before and after the operation. The goal was to better understand why some people experience cognitive decline after heart surgery and find early warning signs.
