New DNA test could uncover hidden eye infections

NCT ID NCT06974162

First seen Nov 20, 2025 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 26 times

Summary

This study tests a new diagnostic test called metagenomic sequencing on eye fluid from 36 adults with unexplained eye inflammation. The test looks for DNA from almost any infection (bacteria, virus, fungus, parasite) that standard tests miss. If it works, it could help doctors find the cause and choose the right treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

metagenomic sequencing of aqueous humor

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors identify hidden infections causing eye inflammation, leading to more targeted treatments.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage diagnostic study with only 36 participants. The technique may not find infections in all cases, and results may not change treatment outcomes.
