Kenya trial finds path to mental health care without specialists

NCT ID NCT03466346

Summary

This study tested two different first-line treatments for depression and PTSD—talk therapy (Interpersonal Psychotherapy) and a common antidepressant (fluoxetine)—when delivered by trained non-specialist health workers in a Kenyan primary care clinic. It aimed to find the most effective and cost-beneficial ways to provide mental health care where specialists are scarce. The goal was to create a flexible treatment plan that could be adjusted if a patient's symptoms did not improve with their initial treatment.
