Coloring or meditating? study finds best way to beat exam nerves
NCT ID NCT07470632
First seen Mar 16, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 16 times
Summary
This study tested two simple, non-drug methods to help nursing students feel less anxious before a big exam. One group colored mandala patterns, while the other practiced a guided meditation called Twin Hearts Meditation. Both activities helped lower anxiety, but the meditation group showed a bigger drop in stress levels. The trial involved 100 first-semester nursing students and measured their anxiety using a standard questionnaire before and after the activity.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Mandala coloring and Twin Hearts Meditation (behavioral interventions)
What this could lead to
If this approach works, it could offer students a simple, drug-free way to manage exam anxiety before tests.
What could go wrong
This was a small, single-center study with only 100 nursing students, so results may not apply to everyone. Also, the effects were measured right after the intervention, so we don't know if they last.
