Lung stem cells infused to fight scarring in rare lung disease

NCT ID NCT04262167

First seen Feb 01, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 18 times

Summary

This early-stage study tests whether a person's own lung stem cells, grown from a small biopsy and given through an IV, are safe for treating idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a disease that causes lung scarring and breathing problems. Twenty-four adults aged 40 to 80 with IPF or similar progressive lung scarring will receive either a low or high dose of stem cells or standard care, and be followed for two years. The main goal is to check for side effects, not yet to prove the treatment works.
