New study tests better methods to open lungs in breathing machines

NCT ID NCT07379242

First seen Feb 01, 2026 · Last updated May 20, 2026 · Updated 10 times

Summary

This study looks at 50 adults on breathing machines for acute respiratory failure. Researchers will compare two techniques—electrical impedance tomography (a type of imaging) and the recruitment-to-inflation ratio (a simple calculation)—to see how well they predict lung recruitment (opening collapsed air sacs). The goal is to find which method is more consistent for guiding ventilator settings.
