First seen Feb 12, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 22 times
Summary
This study tested whether a low FODMAP diet (limiting certain carbs) can reduce stomach pain and bloating in children with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Seventy children aged 4–18 followed either a low or standard FODMAP diet for two weeks, then switched after a break. Researchers measured symptoms and checked gut bacteria and waste products to see how the diet works.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
low FODMAP diet
What this could lead to
If successful, this diet could become a standard, drug-free way to reduce abdominal pain and bloating in children with IBS.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center trial with only 70 children. Dietary changes can be hard to follow, and results may not apply to all kids with IBS.
