Could a cell infusion free liver transplant patients from lifelong drugs?

NCT ID NCT03164265

First seen Oct 01, 2025 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 32 times

Summary

This study tested whether a single infusion of specially prepared donor immune cells (called regulatory dendritic cells) given before a liver transplant could help recipients safely stop taking anti-rejection medications. Sixteen low-risk living donor liver transplant patients received the cell infusion and were followed for several years. The goal was to see if patients could achieve 'operational tolerance'—meaning their body accepts the new liver without needing lifelong drugs.
