New liver sharing rules drive up transplant costs, study finds

NCT ID NCT05087550

Summary

This study looked at how a major 2020 policy change for distributing donated livers affected the costs of getting those organs to patients. Researchers analyzed data from 186 adults who received liver transplants at one center, comparing costs before and after the new rules took effect. The goal was to understand if the policy, designed to help the sickest patients get organs faster, also increased expenses related to transportation, personnel, and hospital charges.
