What the study statuses mean

This study's is highlighted.

Recruitment status, easiest to join first

Recruiting now
This trial is taking on new participants right now.
Not yet recruiting This study
Registered, but not yet taking participants.
By invitation only
Not open to general applications. Only people the study team invites can take part.
Paused
Paused for now. It may or may not start again.
Ongoing
Running, but no longer taking on new participants.
Completed
The trial has finished. Results may not be published yet.
Stopped early
Stopped early, before it reached the end. That can be for many reasons, including safety.
Cancelled
Cancelled before anyone took part.

Expanded access (not trials)

Expanded access
Not a trial. This treatment can be requested outside a study, case by case, for people who qualify.
Expanded access (paused)
Not a trial. The treatment can normally be requested outside a study, but is unavailable right now.
Expanded access (ended)
Not a trial. The treatment could once be requested outside a study, but no longer can.
Approved
The treatment has been approved, so it is available normally rather than through this programme.

Summary

This study tests a near-infrared spectroscopy device that scans the liver with light to diagnose and measure fatty liver disease. Researchers aim to see if it can accurately detect fat levels above 5% and 30%, which are important for liver transplant decisions. The study will include 90 liver grafts and surgical samples from adults. If it works, this non-invasive tool could replace the current biopsy method, which is invasive and can vary between doctors.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
near-infrared spectrometer
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a quick, non-invasive way to measure liver fat, helping doctors decide which donor livers are safe to transplant.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study with only 90 participants, and the device may not be accurate enough to replace current biopsy methods.

Study facts

What this study's own registry entry says, in plain language.

Phase

Not a phased trial

Phase numbers describe drug development. The registry uses this when they do not apply, as it does for trials of devices, procedures or behaviour changes, and for observational studies.

Participants

About 90 people

The number the study aims to enrol. It can still change while the study runs.

Inclusion Criteria: Liver grafts: * Men or women aged 18 and over * All donors accepted by the MA4FC procurement team, including brain-dead donors and Maastricht 3 donors, even if placed on a perfusion machine * Donors whose families have received information about the study and have not expressed any opposition Surgical specimens (hepatectomy): * Men or women aged 18 years and older * Subjects who have undergone surgery for any indication of hepatectomy * Affiliated with social security, * Having received information about the study and not having expressed opposition Exclusion Criteria: Liver grafts: * Donors whose liver will be subject to a SPLIT procedure * Donors for whom there is a medical-legal obstacle * Donors whose family or loved ones oppose scientific sampling: The hospital coordination team will consult the national refusal register and question loved ones to determine whether the deceased would have opposed sampling. If the donor and/or family oppose scientific sampling, then sampling will not be performed.
