New coating for root canal fillings could reduce leaks

NCT ID NCT07205809

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 28 times

Summary

This lab study tests whether a special coating on gutta-percha (the material used to fill root canals) can create a tighter seal than the standard material. Researchers will fill 60 extracted single-root teeth with either coated or uncoated gutta-percha, then measure how much dye leaks in. The goal is to find which combination works best to prevent bacteria from re-entering the tooth.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

bioceramic-coated gutta-percha

What this could lead to

If bioceramic-coated gutta-percha seals better, it could lead to more successful root canal treatments with fewer failures.

What could go wrong

This is a small lab study on extracted teeth, not a clinical trial in patients. Results may not translate to real mouths, and the material may not perform better than the standard.
