New exercise method may speed up knee replacement recovery

NCT ID NCT05999864

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 21 times

Summary

This study tested whether a specific exercise program called proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) helps people recover better after total knee replacement surgery compared to usual care. Fifty patients aged 60 and older who were 6 weeks post-surgery took part. The researchers measured pain, balance, function, and fear of movement over 8 weeks to see if the PNF group improved more.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) exercise program

What this could lead to

If this exercise program works better than usual care, it could become a standard rehab option to help people recover faster and with less pain after knee replacement surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, single-center study with only 50 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The exercises require supervision and may not be practical for all patients.
