New ventilator strategy could help ICU patients breathe easier and leave the machine sooner

Summary
This study tests a new method for adjusting ventilator support in ICU patients with acute breathing failure. Instead of the usual approach based on breath size and rate, doctors will use a target based on the patient's own breathing effort. The goal is to see if this leads to more days off the ventilator and better recovery. About 619 adults will take part across multiple ICUs.
