New way to track iron overload in thalassemia patients?

NCT ID NCT07486531

First seen Apr 02, 2026 · Last updated May 20, 2026 · Updated 6 times

Summary

This study looked at 100 people with beta thalassemia major, a serious blood disorder requiring frequent blood transfusions. Transfusions can cause dangerous iron buildup in the body. Currently, doctors use a blood test called ferritin to monitor iron levels, but ferritin can be inaccurate. Researchers tested a simpler, cheaper method to measure iron directly inside red blood cells, aiming to improve how iron overload is tracked and treated.
