Baby formula gets a boost: can added breast milk sugars improve gut health?
NCT ID NCT06361719
First seen Jan 02, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 24 times
Summary
This study is testing whether a ready-to-feed infant formula with two added human milk oligosaccharides (2'FL and LNnT) can help healthy Chinese babies develop better gut bacteria and immune systems. About 262 infants will be randomly assigned to receive either the test formula or a standard formula, with a separate group of breastfed babies for comparison. The study will measure changes in gut bacteria and other health markers over the first year of life.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
infant formula with 2'FL and LNnT (human milk oligosaccharides)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that adding these HMOs to formula supports gut health and immune development similar to breast milk.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study in healthy infants, so results may not apply to other populations or show clear benefits. The formula is not a treatment for any disease.
As listed by the trial registrant
