Can a simple bedside panel make intensive care feel more human?
NCT ID NCT07830043
First seen Sep 21, 2026 · Last updated Sep 21, 2026
Summary
Intensive care units focus on complex medical care, which can push aside who a patient is as a person. This trial tests a low-cost panel placed near each patient's bed where the care team, patient, and family record how the patient likes to be addressed, their interests, and what matters to them. Staff at six Brazilian ICUs receive training to use that information in daily care. Researchers compare family satisfaction, patient-reported communication, and family anxiety and depression during standard care versus when the panel is in use.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- a structured bedside 'Patient as a Person' panel completed by the care team with the patient and family, plus staff training
- What this could lead to
- If it helps, this could give hospitals a low-cost way to make intensive care feel more personal and improve how families experience a loved one's stay.
- What could go wrong
- Satisfaction scores can rise for reasons unrelated to the panel, and results from six Brazilian ICUs may not carry over to other hospitals or health systems.
