New scan may spare thousands of thyroid cancer patients from unneeded radiation
NCT ID NCT01704586
First seen May 14, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study looks at whether a special PET/CT scan using I-124 can help doctors decide which thyroid cancer patients truly need radioactive iodine treatment after surgery. Many low-risk patients currently receive this treatment, but it may not benefit them and carries a small risk of causing other cancers. The study will compare standard care with a scan-guided approach to see if it can safely reduce unnecessary radiation exposure and improve quality of life.
