Hormone shield? study tests if progesterone or testosterone can prevent dangerous heart rhythms

NCT ID NCT04675788

First seen Mar 31, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 7 times

Summary

This study looked at whether the hormones progesterone (in women) and testosterone (in men) can reduce the heart's sensitivity to a drug that can cause dangerous heart rhythm changes. Researchers gave 73 older adults either the hormone or a placebo, then a small dose of the heart-affecting drug ibutilide, and measured electrical changes in the heart. The goal was to see if these hormones could protect against drug-induced heart rhythm problems.
