Two-Drug HIV pill works well in teens, cuts side effects

NCT ID NCT03682848

First seen Jan 05, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 26 times

Summary

This study tested a once-daily pill containing two HIV drugs (dolutegravir and lamivudine) in 32 teens aged 12 to 18 who had never taken HIV medication before. The goal was to see if this simpler two-drug regimen could safely control the virus after 48 weeks. Results showed the pill effectively suppressed HIV, offering a way to reduce long-term side effects from more complex drug combinations. Since HIV requires lifelong treatment, this is a disease-control approach, not a cure.
