Smokers' gum healing linked to low protein levels
NCT ID NCT07367737
First seen Jan 27, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 15 times
Summary
This study looks at 50 people with gum disease (25 smokers, 25 non-smokers) to see if smoking lowers a protein called histatin-1 in saliva, which may explain slower healing. Participants get standard non-surgical gum treatment, and their saliva and gum health are checked before, one month, and three months after. The goal is to understand the link between smoking, this protein, and recovery.
