Daily pill trial aims to shield vulnerable patients from painful herpes Flare-Ups

NCT ID NCT07341386

Summary

This study is testing whether taking a daily antiviral pill (acyclovir) can prevent painful and frequent herpes outbreaks in people with autoimmune diseases like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. These patients often take medications that weaken their immune system, making them more prone to infections. For 12 months, half the participants will take the real pill and half will take a placebo (sugar pill), and researchers will compare how many herpes outbreaks each group has.
