First seen May 05, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 7 times

Summary

This phase 3 trial tests whether sodium thiosulfate, given after cisplatin chemotherapy, can prevent hearing loss in children with hepatoblastoma (a rare liver cancer). About 330 children will be enrolled, some receiving the hearing-protecting drug and others not. The study also adjusts treatment intensity for children whose cancer has spread.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Sodium thiosulfate (STS) given intravenously to protect hearing during cisplatin chemotherapy

What this could lead to

If successful, this could reduce permanent hearing loss in children treated for hepatoblastoma, improving their quality of life after cancer therapy.

What could go wrong

This is a large phase 3 trial, but sodium thiosulfate may not effectively prevent hearing damage in all children, and it could interfere with chemotherapy effectiveness. Results may not apply to all patient groups.
